The Clash of the Titans Restarts on August 20th

It may be due to its aesthetics or maybe to the game being at its craziest. It may concern colors, chants, and rivalries. Perhaps it’s just a matter of croissant and cappuccino. Or, simply like that, it’s just a cultural feeling, known as calcio but pronounced Serie A.

Serie A is neither a league nor a competition. It is ‘the’ Clash of the Titans, starring gods from the ‘Olympus of Football’. Gladiators fighting to get the honor of wearing on their chest their Holy Grail, the proof that miracles and gods still exist: the Italian Scudetto.

Yesterday’s gods were Gaetano Scirea, Claudio Gentile, Diego Armando Maradona, Francesco Totti. Today, they bear the names of Gianluigi Buffon and Gianluigi Donnarumma, of Marek Hamsik and Daniele De Rossi. Players that frame dreams, create legends, and give supporters magical moments of insane euphoria, of pure religion of football.

Yes, you read well, religion. Because from Bozen to Pantelleria, passing by Milan, Venice, Rome, and Naples, calcio is a religion without atheists, where gods inspire faith through unforgettable moments, beautiful jerseys, and subliminal masterpieces of football.

Masterpieces such as the one of trainer Jose Mourinho, the Special One, who in 2010 led Inter Milan to conquer an historical triplete – the only one in Italy to win Scudetto, Coppa Italia and Champions League in the same season. Or those happening in a more modest match like Chievo-Sampdoria, in which a delicate and sensational lob shot from Fabio Quagliarella softly delivered the ball in the net after a 40m flight path. Or those taking the form of an harmonic overhead kick by which two years ago El Pipita Gonzalo Higuain broke Gunnar Nordahl’s record for most goals scored in a single Serie A season (36), which had been set in 1949-50!

Few days are left until the restart of the most exciting battle. Juventus sits on the throne, having set the hard law of the champions with six league titles in a row. However, the new season starting on August 20th may lead to surprises, as AC Milan, Roma, Inter Milan, and Napoli are ready to chase the fight to conquer the only Italian Holy Grail: Lo Scudetto.
