The Top 5 Goals of Serie A Round 2: Cristiano Ronaldo Flies in Rome

Serie A was a joy to watch this weekend. There were goals galore with Napoli leading the way with a 6-0 thrashing of Genoa, while Fiorentina and Inter provided a lot of excitement at the San Siro with their 4-3 thriller. The 10 games of Round 2 witnessed 43 goals, one better than the other.

There were great goals across the three match days, but we cannot include every one of them. But special mention is warranted for the following five, in addition to the Luis Muriel strike that has been discussed before. Gaetano Letizia’s strike from Marco Sau assist gave Benevento a warranted win over Sampdoria on the road.  Elif Elmas’ effort for Napoli requires a mention, so does Filip Djuricic and  Francesco Caputo strikes for Sassuolo. Bologna impressed in their 4-1 win over Parma, with goals from Roberto Soriano and Rodrigo Palacio earning a mention.

So, without further ado, here is our list of top five goals from Serie A in the order of their occurrence:

  1.  Alejandro Gomez vs. Torino

Luis Muriel’s goal will make plenty of highlight reels. His piercing shot is worthy of a mention but does not make our list. El Papu Gomez’s long-distance shot does. The quality of the strike and the moment of its arrival makes it worthy. Atalanta went down a goal after Andrea Belotti’s heroics gave Torino the lead. The Argentine answered emphatically, canceling out the lead in 90 seconds. Gomez exchanged the ball with Zapata before unleashing a scorching shot for which Salvatore Sirigu had no answer.

  1. Lautaro Martinez vs. Fiorentina

Atalanta started the goal fiesta, but it was at the Giuseppe Meazza, where it all boiled over. Inter went behind in the third minute, but to all their probing of La Viola could not trouble the scorers. An Antonio Conte dressing down awaited them until Lautaro Martinez’s equalizer in first-half added time. Receiving the ball from Nicoló Barella, the Argentine sent it into the top left corner for his first goal of the 2020-21 campaign.

  1.   Federico Chiesa vs. Inter

Chiesa gave a good account of himself against the Nerazzurri. He fought for the ball and ensured La Viola were in the game. The Fiorentina youth academy graduate was on hand to put the finishing touches to Franck Ribery’s designs. Ribery sliced Inter’s defense for the second time on the night, freeing Chiesa to take the goalkeeper on, which he duly obliged. Even if the Italian had not scored, the genius of Ribery would have made the play of the week.

  1. Piotr Zieliński vs. Genoa

Napoli did an “Atalanta” with their 6-0 win over Genoa. Dries Mertens was the architect-in-chief for the Partenopei as they cruised to a famous victory. But their second of the night right at the start of the second half only had Piotr Zielinski’s name stamped on it. The Polish midfielder brought the ball from deep before connecting with Victor Osimhen to get on the scoreboard. The goal opened the floodgates as Gennaro Gattuso’s men would add four more to their tally in the next twenty-five minutes.

  1. Cristiano Ronaldo vs. Roma

Jordan Veretout’s second goal gave Roma the lead going into the second half. However, even after the Old Lady had been reduced to 10-men, they bossed possession and looked likely to score, albeit also likely to concede. With Cristiano Ronaldo in their ranks, the former was always a possibility. The Portuguese delivered in style to spare Andrea Pirlo the blushes. Danilo’s floated cross from the right flank was met by Ronaldo, who was floating over the Roma defense to slot the ball home.
