Serie A title hopefuls Juventus dropped two valuable points in a stomach-wrenching 1-1 home draw against relegation-battling Cagliari on Sunday. Thiago Motta addressed the media after the game, delivering his verdict on a morale-wracking result at the Allianz Stadium.
Juventus took the lead after only 15 minutes. Dusan Vlahovic converted a controversial penalty to maintain his uptick in form, scoring in his last three appearances in any competition. However, Motta’s side got complacent after going in front, perhaps overly relying on a defense that hadn’t conceded a league goal until today.
Douglas Luiz’s late slip-up handed Cagliari a glorious opportunity to claim an away point against Juventus for the first time since a 1-1 stalemate in May 2015. Razvan Marin was relentless from the spot, becoming the first Serie A player to score against the Bianconeri in 2024/25.
It was Juve’s fourth draw in their last five league outings, allowing table-topping Napoli to extend their lead at the summit to three points. Motta admitted after the match that Juventus failed to produce much in the attacking third after breaking the deadlock.
“In the first half, we controlled the game, we managed instead of attacking,” the Juventus boss said, as reported by Gianluca Di Marzio. “In the second half, we created but didn’t finish, there was always the feeling that Cagliari could get back into the game.
“After the lead, we became passive, instead we have to improve and continue to attack in the right way. The games in Serie A are all complicated, today we left that small space for Cagliari to get back into the game. It was difficult to close it.”
