Official: Thiago Motta is the New Bologna Coach

The signing of Thiago Motta to Bologna was made official earlier today. Motta was always the first choice to replace Siniša Mihajlović at I Rossoblù following the Serb’s sacking last week.

It did not take Bologna very long to find their trainer. It was expected that the ex-Spezia boss would take over the reigns at the dall’Ara after the Fiorentina match, which Bologna won 2-1. That was Bologna’s first win of the season, with much being expected from Motta.

This is the Italian’s first job since parting ways with Spezia over the summer. In his only full season with the Aquilotti, he guided them to a 16th place finish in the Serie A. It was his second role as a head coach of a senior team. In late 2019, Motta had a short 10-game stint as coach of Genoa. After just two wins, the former midfielder got the axe.

As discussed last week, we do believe that Bologna’s hiring of Thiago Motta is not the best decision they could have gone for. Given his relative inexperience in such a position, they could be in for a very long season.
