Tonali: “We Will Defend the Scudetto Down to the Last Drop of Sweat”

Milan squeezed an all-important 2-1 win over Salernitana to maintain their charge behind league leaders Napoli, who are now five points ahead albeit with a game to play. Two first-half goals from Rafael Leao and Sandro Tonali were enough to warrant the Salerno natives a defeat, with Federico Bonazzoli grabbing a consolation in the 83rd minute.

Tonali, who played a vital role in the win, spoke to Sky Sport (via Tuttomercatoweb) after the match and revealed the threat posed by Salernitana.

“We already knew from last year that playing here is difficult. The last few minutes, after the 2-1 draw, were even more complicated, with Salernitana pushing with the backing of a wonderful crowd.”

Tonali believes Pioli’s men could have had more goals to their name. Nonetheless, the victory keeps the Rossoneri in the race for the Scudetto, which Milan wish to defend with all their might.

“We are a strong team, we were almost perfect but we could have scored one or two more goals. We are happy for these three points and it was important and fundamental to win this match. We know what we did last year, we will defend the Scudetto down to the last drop of sweat, all together, players, staff and fans. Here I scored my first professional goal in a Brescia shirt, it was also nice to score with Milan in this stadium.”

Milan have now won in all six Serie A games in which Tonali has scored at least a goal. Resumption of the campaign with a win means the reigning champions still have what it takes to defend their crown, as they sit in second position, five ahead of Juventus and six ahead of Lazio and Inter.
