Toronto FC Lay Eyes on More Serie A Players Besides Insigne

On top of Lorenzo Insigne, Toronto FC are tracking another Serie A star on an expiring deal, Andrea Belotti. The Torino captain is likely to leave and has turned down the extension multiple times. He is on the radar of Milan, Inter, and Fiorentina for a potential Bosman move.

According to SportMediaset, the talks between the Canadian side and the 28-year-old have only been preliminary so far. He is one of the options they are weighing given his contractual situation. The details of their bid have yet to be disclosed, but it will be superior to any other Italian one.

Toronto FC are looking to fleece Serie A following the success of the Sebastian Giovinco operation. They touched base also for Domenico Criscito and Mattia Destro. However, the two, and especially the defender, will likely stay at Genoa. Their inquiries did not progress past the initial stages.

The MLS franchise would have better chances of landing Belotti if Insigne committed to them, the publication speculates. The Napoli ace would get a mammoth salary bump if he accepted. He would earn €11.5M as a base salary plus €4.5M potential add-ons, Corriere della Sera reports. He is tempted but has not entirely made up his mind about leaving Europe yet. In any case, he does not want to join another Italian team if he leaves the Azzurri.

Giovinco advised Insigne against moving to Toronto FC in an interview with La Repubblica: “I was not playing at Juventus at the time, while he is the Napoli captain and just won the Euro. It is a unique opportunity, but it may not be as appealing it sounds. You risk being forgotten there. It is a completely different league and was more fun back then. But I do not regret it.”
