Tottenham to Continue Serie A Shopping Spree, Pursue Roma Linchpin

Lorenzo Pellegrini is finishing off the rehab from the thigh injury that cost him the Euro. He will be ready for the start of the new season. But it is not yet 100 percent sure it will still be with Roma. His current contract expires in 2022 and the extension talks have not gone well thus far, Calciomercato.com reports. Tottenham and other clubs are keeping tabs on him.

The Italian international has been in the same situation in the past, and always eventually agreed to a new deal. His desire would be to continue with the Giallorossi. However, the two parties have been negotiating for a year and a half without reaching an agreement. The management is focusing on the new additions and the discussion will likely re-start only in September.

This time, Roma will have to convince the player, who is looking to get a pay raise, on top of tacking on few more years. He is currently making €2.5M net per season. Tottenham are monitoring the situation, as new director Fabio Paratici is very familiar with the midfielder.

Pellegrini has a €30M release clause in his current deal, which expires in 10 days. Barcelona and Liverpool eyed him earlier in the window but did not activate it. The player’s priority is to stay with Roma, which has dissuaded the suitors, but things could change in the next few weeks. Tottenham added him to their list of Serie A targets, which includes Atalanta’s Pierluigi Gollini, Bologna’s Takehiro Tomiyasu and Fiorentina’s Dusan Vlahovic.
