Francesco Totti didn’t mince his words about his lack of involvement in Roma and is concerned for the future of Daniele De Rossi. He spoke to Il Messaggero.
“I don’t know why I’m not part of the team. Perhaps I’m too loyal or sincere, or I’d be a cumbersome presence. My words have more weight than others. They seem afraid to have somebody like me in the management. They don’t believe I could help. Nobody called me, and I won’t plead for a job. I would never be the sporting director, but perhaps take on a role like Zlatan Ibrahimovic or Javier Zanetti. A link between the management, the team, and the coach. Somebody who says it like it is.”
Totti has no interest in helping other clubs.
“A few teams pursued me, but I wouldn’t do it. It’d be a failure to be an exec for another side. For Roma, not for me. I’m disappointed given all I’ve done for the Giallorossi. Their ownership changes every few years. Each has their own ideas that need to be respected.”
Totti praised but also warned De Rossi.
“I have never had any issue with him. I’d give a hand or an arm for him to be well. We’d work in unison if I were an official. I don’t understand the new roster. They signed four players late, and it looks like a hodgepodge.”
“Considering how much they invested, they must qualify for the Champions League, or they’ll fire the coach. He mustn’t isolate himself and talk with the right people. He’s become an umbrella and risks paying the price for it, like José Mourinho, who had little help. The past has already been forgotten.”
