Two Former Serie A Coaches Likely to Be Edged Out for PSG Job

In a minor surprise on Thursday, PSG decided to sack Thomas Tuchel, as first announced by Bild and L’Equipe. While two gaffers that spent time in Serie A were potentially in the running, Massimiliano Allegri and Thiago Motta, Mauricio Pochettino is the clear frontrunner to become his successor and an agreement could be reached in the next few hours, Gianluca Di Marzio and multiple outlets reports. PSG is currently third in the Ligue 1 standings, one point behind Lyon and Lille, and is coming off a 4-0 win over Strasbourg.

Allegri is free of any contractual obligations as his contract with Juventus expired in June and, while he has been linked to the French club and other top teams in recent months, Di Marzio informed that there has not been any recent contact between director Leonardo and the six-time Scudetto winner.

Motta was instead considered a more serious contender given his connection with PSG: after six years as a player, he went to coach the U-19 side, a position he abandoned when Genoa appointed him in October of 2019. However, he did not have much success with the Rossoblù as he was fired after nine games where he collected just one win, tied three times and lost in five occasions.

Our view

It would be a tough break for Allegri if Pochettino beat him out as reported as he has been a candidate for the PSG bench for quite some time. On the other hand, Motta, despite his deep ties with the team, would be a bizarre hire given the lack of experience he showed in the Peninsula.
