USA Player Ratings vs Netherlands: Pulisic Unable to Drag USA Further

The USA suffered a 3-1 defeat against the Netherlands in the first round of 16 clash of the World Cup despite efforts from Christian Pulisic. USA’s star man had a wonderful chance in the opening phases to put the Stars and Stripes ahead but he was denied by goalkeeper Andries Noppert before Memphis Depay and Denzel Dumfries went on to steal the show for the Netherlands and send them through to the quarter-finals. So, here’s our USA player ratings for their defeat against the Netherlands.

USA (4-3-3):

Matt Turner – 7

Had to make a superb stop to keep out an own goal at the beginning of the second half. Tipped the ball over from a decent strike by Memphis Depay around the hour mark. Brilliant double save with just under 20 minutes to go to keep the USA in the game. Made a good number of saves but it was difficult for him here.

Sergino Dest – 5

Looked dangerous when running at the Dutch defense at times. Failed to track Daley Blind in the box for the second goal of the match.

Walker Zimmerman – 5

Made a couple of tackles and clearances but struggled up against the pace of Depay.

Tim Ream – 5

Caught in behind a little by the pace of Depay and also played a couple of poor passes from the back. Struggled to do much with the ball in possession and should have put the ball in the back of net from a corner in the second half.

Antonee Robinson – 7

Managed to break past the Dutch midfield at times down the left flank. Made a few interceptions throughout and tracked back well too. Was up and down the whole game and can certainly not be at fault in terms of work rate.

Tyler Adams – 6.5

Made some excellent recovery tackles at the base of midfield, just in front of the defense. Should have done better to track back for Depay’s opener. Made a few decent challenges and interceptions in the midfield in general, however.

Weston McKennie – 6

Played a number of good forward passes and was progressing the ball superbly for the United States. Was a little overrun defensively but his intent with the ball was impressive.

Yunus Musah – 5.5

Was a little sloppy and struggled to impact the game much here. Did manage to win a couple of tackles in the midfield.

Timothy Weah – 5.5

Deployed over on the right flank but was scarcely involved in the first half. Did start to get more involved at the end of the first forty five and did manage to force Noppert into making a decent stop after firing in a good strike.

Jesus Ferreira – 5

Struggled a little when receiving the ball but won a couple of duels. Didn’t do much to impact the game before being taken off for Giovanni Reyna at half time.

Christian Pulisic – 7

Had a fantastic chance early on but was denied by Noppert. Looked lively and heavily involved in the opening phases but threat dwindled as the game went on. Supplied the cross for Haji Wright’s goal in the second half and was the biggest threat for USA but it was tough for him against a strong Dutch defense.

Substitutions

Giovanni Reyna – 5.5

Linked play quite well at times but lacked a bit of extra quality in the final third.

Brenden Aaronson – N/A

Haji Wright – 6.5

Had a decent chance by nearly capitalising on a poor back pass by Depay. Managed to somehow find the back of the net as the ball flicked off his foot with around 15 minutes to go to keep the USA in the match.

DeAndre Yedlin – N/A
