Veiga Explains Why He Snubbed Napoli in Summer Window

Gabri Veiga seemed set to transfer from Celta Vigo to Napoli last summer, but Al-Alhi pipped the Azzurri at the post, activating his release clause and offering him larger wages. The midfielder revisited his transfer speaking with AS (via Tuttomercatoweb).

“As always in the transfer market, teams have their shortlists in different positions. We received the interest from Napoli, which are a great team. Nobody doubts that. I liked the project, as I would have joined a side that plays in the Champions League.”

Veiga personally contributed to the U-turn in the Napoli deal.

“On the other hand, everything changes overnight in football. There was a moment when, for whatever reason, the club’s vision about me was no longer the same. I thought, and still do, that it wouldn’t have been the right place for me to feel important or have the game time I needed to grow after having a starring role last season.”

Veiga sensed Napoli didn’t believe enough in him.

“In the end, a player needs to feel that from the beginning, especially when moving to a new place. I needed to perceive the confidence. It didn’t happen with them, but I don’t hold grudges. I wish them the best because I think they are a great side. However, I believe I have made the decision for me to keep growing.”

Veiga is making €12.5M annually at Al-Ahli, five or six times what he would have earned at Napoli, Goal informs.
