Verona Officially First Serie A Team to Sack Their Coach This Season

The Eusebio Di Francesco era in Verona is over after just three matches. While Cagliari and Salernitana are considering the same move, the Scaligeri pulled the trigger right away after Monday’s loss to Bologna. Despite showing some fight, they were also defeated by Sassuolo and Inter before the break.

It is the fourth straight firing for Di Francesco, whose downward spiral continues following his Roma days. He had done poorly at Sampdoria and Cagliari as well in the last two seasons. The coach is in the midst of an incredible losing streak, which continued in Verona. His last win dates back to November 2020. He dropped 23 of the past 33 games, 70 percent. He once made it to the Champions League semifinal with the Giallorossi, but his style of football has not worked with the minnows.

Igor Tudor is the clear frontrunner to replace him. Verona are in talks with Juventus to terminate his contract, Gianluca Di Marzio informs. He was Andrea Pirlo’s top assistant in the past campaign. At one point, he seemed poised to take over the Bianconeri, which caused frictions inside the staff.

Tudor previously managed Udinese in two separate stints. He has had more success abroad, where he guided Hajduk Split twice, PAOK, Karabukspor, and Galatasary. He has won the Croatian cup once. Verona reached out also to Giuseppe Iachini and Rolando Maran. But there should not be any hiccup in getting their top choice. Tudor will be in town later today to negotiate his next contract, the transfer market adds.
