Veteran Defender Mulling Future After Leaving Monza

Monza surprisingly announced to have mutually parted ways with Andrea Ranocchia yesterday. The former Inter defender was their first signing following the historic promotion to Serie A. He had agreed to a three-year contract. However, he suffered a serious lower leg injury after just a handful of games.

As per La Repubblica, the center-back personally asked to be released. The team eventually accepted after trying to change his mind. It will take him at least four months to heal from shinbone and fibula fractures. But he might not return on the pitch at all, as he’s seriously contemplating retirement. He gave up €4M.

Monza CEO Adriano Galliani lauded Ranocchia to Corriere della Sera (via Tuttomercatoweb).

“He confirmed to be the person I thought he was. A true gentleman.”

The former Inter veteran will focus on his rehab and then decide what to do. Should he hang his cleats, he might become a businessman rather than staying in football as a coach or an executive, La Repubblica adds. In recent years, he invested in renovating an old monastery in his hometown Assisi, making it a wellness and wedding venue.

Our Take on Ranocchia Leaving Monza

The news came out of the blue, as he was supposed to be one of their linchpins this season. He could have helped in the locker room even without playing. It’s an understandable choice, and he has a long road ahead to get healthy, and he can take his time if his heart is no longer into it. But if the recovery goes well and he modifies his stance, the Brianzoli, or Inter, would surely be ready to hand him another contract.
