Veteran Goalkeeper Joins Como Pre-Season Camp

It shapes up to be a revolutionary summer for Serie A newcomers Como. Back to the top flight after over two decades, the Italian minnows are going above and beyond to piece together a squad capable of securing top-tier survival

Former Milan goalkeeper Pepe Reina has already touched down at the Como pre-season training camp. The 41-year-old Spaniard has yet to join I Lariani. But while waiting for his move to become official, Reina has teamed up with Cesc Fabregas’ side for off-season preparations.

Reina will turn 42 next month. However, he is not ready to retire yet. The veteran keeper will be part of the Como dressing room next season. After cutting short his two-year association with Villarreal, he’ll return to Serie A at the tail-end of his illustrious playing career.

It will be Reina’s third stint in Serie A. Before moving to Milan in 2018, he spent three years at Napoli between 2015 and 2018. He then joined Lazio, where he was a second-choice stopper between 2020 and 2022. Given his age, he’ll likely be a backup option at Como.

Adding to this sentiment, Como will soon announce the arrival of ex-Roma star Pau Lopez from Olympique Marseille. The 29-year-old will likely be the club’s regular starter in 2024/25. But having a goalie of Reina’s quality and experience on the bench can’t hurt.

On top of Reina’s arrival, it’s only a matter of time before Raphael Varane’s shock switch to Como becomes official.
