World Cup Winner Lippi Praises Italy Debutant Retegui

2006 World Cup-winning manager Marcelo Lippi has praised debutant Mateo Retegui for punching above his weight in Italy’s recent UEFA Euro 2024 qualifying matches. The Tigre striker first scored the consolation in his maiden international game, a 2-1 loss to England in Napoli, before netting the opener in the 2-0 win over Malta on Sunday.

Lippi, who has managed some of the most iconic names in the sport, believes Retegui resembles the classic center-forward with a penchant for taking advantage of situations in the box.

“He’s the classic centre-forward who scores. He has a strong header. I like how he plays in the box, that’s why I think he’s a good striker” said Marcello Lippi in an interview with Super Deportivo Radio (via FCInterNews).

Several Italian top dogs and foreign clubs are on the hunt for Retegui after he was cast into the spotlight by Roberto Mancini with the call-up to the Azzurri squad. Inter, Atalanta, Udinese, and Milan are all in contention to bag the poacher’s signature come summer, as are Atletico Madrid and Eintracht Frankfurt.
