Victor Osimhen’s contributions have been immensely significant in propelling Napoli atop Serie A standings. The arrival of the Nigerian back in 2020 has proven instrumental in the Partenopei’s bid for a first Scudetto title in over 30 years.
However, latest reports from Corriere dello Sport (via TuttoNapoli) indicate that the club management had Osimhen in their crosshairs not long before the summer of 2020. It was the end of 2019 when Napoli had decided to onboard a new striker, but the Nigerian marksman was not their premier choice.

Astonishingly, two other top forwards were targeted by the Partenopei, including Ballon d’Or winner Karim Benzema. However, the Real Madrid center-forward proved too tight for Napoli’s financial standing, especially given his stature at Los Blancos.
Subsequently, Erling Haaland, who was then at RB Salzburg, was chosen to arrive at Stadio Diego Armando Maradona. Despite having a meeting with the young talent’s agent, it was Haaland who rejected the transfer and instead moved to Borussia Dortmund.

Napoli were left with few choices, out of which Osimhen stood out as a contender. The club eventually spent €75M to bring the Nigerian from LOSC Lille – a decision that has so far proved fruitful with Osimhen having so far scored 45 goals in 83 appearances in his third season running.
