What Does the Future Hold for Max Allegri?

Massimiliano Allegri has been out of work since May, as Juventus relieved him of his duties after his infamous outburst in the Coppa Italia. Calciomercato took stock of the 57-year-old’s future amid speculation he could return to Milan to replace Paulo Fonseca.

After a trophy-laden five-year stint at Juventus between 2014 and 2019, Allegri returned to Turin in 2021 to help the Bianconeri overcome a massive crisis. However, nothing went his way at the Allianz Stadium in the past three years, culminating with his dismissal in May.

The decorated manager’s career is now at a crossroads.

There’s an outside chance for Allegri to stay in Serie A. Milan could be on the verge of sacking Fonseca only a month into the new season. Zlatan Ibrahimovic has reportedly sounded the experienced tactician out about a potential San Siro reunion.

However, that hypothesis looks far-fetched. Milan already consider four managers to take Fonseca’s place, with ex-Lazio boss Igor Tudor emerging as the latest candidate for the job. Another remote possibility lies far away from Serie A.

Allegri could be an option for Manchester United. Erik ten Hag has yet to cement his position at Old Trafford. Therefore, a possible switch to the Premier League is on the cards. But it’d take a substantial winless run from the Dutchman to warrant a dismissal.

The most realistic scenario is a big-money move to Saudi Arabia. Allegri could follow in the footsteps of Stefano Pioli, who won on his touchline debut at Al-Nassr on Friday. Plenty of options are still in play as the Livorno-born coach bids to return to management.
