Yann Sommer Explains Inter ‘Tactical’ Approach Against Juventus

After back-to-back wins ‘to nil’ before the international break, Inter failed to keep a clean sheet as Juventus held them to a 1-1 derby draw on Sunday. Simone Inzaghi’s side traveled to Turin keen to settle the score after Bianconeri completed a league double over them last term.

However, table toppers and the best defensive team in Serie A conceded only their seventh league goal this season as Dusan Vlahovic scored on the stroke of the half-hour mark. Yann Sommer, who has enjoyed a stellar start to life at Inter, couldn’t do anything to deny the Serbian his fifth top-flight goal in 2023/24.

Interestingly, Juventus scored from the only shot on target. But no one can blame Sommer for letting the ball rattle the back of the net. Except for that 27th-minute blip, Inter performed exceptionally at the back, especially in the second half. It’s enough to say they prevented Massimiliano Allegri’s side from attempting a single shot after the break.

Seemingly content with a draw themselves, Inter had just one second-half shot. Claiming bragging rights in these fixtures could often be season-defining moments. But as confirmed by Sommer, no one was ready to take any risks.

In the second half you could see that neither team wanted to risk anything,” the Inter goalkeeper said, as quoted by FCInterNews. “There weren’t many chances. In the second half, it became a very tactical match.”

Despite going winless in a third consecutive Serie A encounter against Juventus, Inter won’t lose much sleep as they protected their place at the table’s summit.
