Yann Sommer Opens Up on His First Season at Inter

Yann Sommer couldn’t have hoped for a more telling first season at Inter. The Switzerland international helped the Nerazzurri win their 20th Scudetto in his maiden Serie A campaign, exceeding all expectations.

Inter paid Bayern Munich around €6.75 million to sign Sommer last summer after losing Andre Onana to Manchester United. Replacing the Cameroonian was supposed to be a tall order for the 35-year-old, but he made light work of it.

Sommer’s brilliant start to life at Inter saw him register 19 clean sheets and concede only 19 goals across 34 Serie A appearances. The Golden Glove winner shared his view of his switch from the Bundesliga, explaining how past experiences helped him thrive at Giuseppe Meazza.

I didn’t feel so much pressure at Inter,Sommer told Swiss broadcaster SRF.Perhaps it is linked to the fact of not having understood everything that was written at the beginning. I felt really happy coming to Meazza. I felt welcome from day one. That made everything easier.”

No stranger to replacing famous keepers, Sommer admitted filling Marc-Andre ter Stegen’s shoes at Borussia Monchengladbach was a helpful experience.

Of course, it helps. Even at Gladbach, it was a challenge for me that I wanted to accept. My goal has always been not to be a copy of another goalkeeper, the Inter stopper continued.I, Yann Sommer, wanted to be a good goalkeeper for the new club. I have always done well not to compare myself, but rather to bring my game, my ideas, and my creativity to the pitch.”
