Zanetti on Lukaku: “We Expected a Different Behavior”

Javier Zanetti turned 50 and took stock of his career and some Inter-related topics in an interview with La Gazzetta dello Sport.

“I’ve spent 28 of them in Italy and at this club. That’s a privilege. I’m a happy father and professional, also because of the gratitude of the people. I work behind the scenes and make myself useful because I know how things work. The corporate and sports areas and the coach are aware that I’m there when needed. I’m always thinking about the growth of the club, also thanks to my social projects and my role within UEFA and FIFA. And I try to get better.”

Zanetti was quizzed about Romelu Lukaku.

“As a professional and man, we expected a different kind of behavior considering what Inter did for him. He has the right to go wherever he wants, obviously, but he should have said that beforehand. Nobody is bigger than the team. When you build it, you must always consider whom you are bringing into the locker room.”

Zanetti praised the new captain Lautaro Martinez.

“He took the right steps with humility. I’m happy with his journey. He’ll have to reaffirm his leadership with even more responsibilities, but he has the right sense of belonging and knows how to be an example. He makes facts speak for him, and that’s apropos for the role.”
