Milan center-back Fikayo Tomori has outlined his seasonal goals after Rossoneri failed to make it out of the Champions League group stages. A come-from-behind 2-1 win at Newcastle United on the final matchday helped the Italians switch to the Europa League knockout playoff round.
Though high-flying Premier League leaders Liverpool are the favorites to lift the second-most prestigious European title, Tomori has urged Milan to take the Europa League seriously. The English defender believes his side has the quality to go the distance in the only European competition they’ve failed to win throughout their storied continental history.
“Now we are in the Europa League, and we have to give everything to win it. If we play every game like we did in the second half against Newcastle, I’m sure we can do better in this competition,” Tomori said in an interview with MilanTV, as relayed by Pianet Milan.
Second-half goals from Christian Pulisic and Samuel Chukwueze turned the game at St James’ Park on its head as Milan pipped Newcastle to a third-place finish in the Champions League ‘group of death.’ As a result, they brace themselves for a less impressive spring in the Europa League.
Making a standout success on the continental front could be the only saving grace for Stefano Pioli. Milan face an uphill task to reignite their Serie A title pursuit, trailing leaders Inter by nine points. Sunday’s home encounter against Monza is, therefore, a must-win contest. But given Rossoneri’s domestic wobble, they can’t take anything for granted.
