Inter Boss Simone Inzaghi Congratulates Milan on Derby Victory

Simone Inzaghi concedes Milan outplayed Inter in Sunday’s Serie A derby and ‘deservedly’ claimed a 2-1 victory at San Siro. The reigning Scudetto holders were up the creek without a paddle despite carrying a favorite tag into the match.

In addition to giving up a six-game winning run against Milan, Inter recorded a third winless league encounter in five at the start of their title defense. The game couldn’t have started worse for the nominal hosts as Christian Pulisic scored after ten minutes to fire the Rossoneri 1-0 up.

Things were back to ‘normal’ when Lautaro Martinez put Federico Dimarco one-on-one with Mike Maignan midway through the first half. The Italian wingback was ruthless, slamming the ball past the Frenchman to draw Inter level.

However, Inter looked disjointed in the second half. They were on the verge of getting a point before Matteo Gabbia’s late header stunned a sold-out San Siro, handing Paulo Fonseca’s charges an all-important three points.

Inzaghi knows Inter performed below expectations. He lauded Milan for the win in the post-match interview.

Of course, Milan are a very good team. They did better than us this evening and deserved the victory,” he said, as relayed by Pazzi di Fanta. “We had the wrong approach and weren’t enough of a team, which is rare for us. We didn’t start either half with the right attitude, I tried to change a few things, but it didn’t help the situation.

We weren’t solid, we lost our shape and allowed too many through balls. There was a spell after we equalized for about 20 minutes when we had several more scoring opportunities, but then we came out for the second half with the same wrong attitude as the first. That was decisive, we weren’t working as a team enough,” the Inter boss concluded.
