Milan center-back Matteo Gabbia acknowledges the entire backline’s responsibility for a disappointing 2-1 loss against Fiorentina. During his post-match interview with DAZN, the resurgent defender slammed the Rossoneri defense for a horror reaction leading to Albert Gudmundsson’s match-winner.
“I think the whole defense got it wrong on the second goal,” the Milan rearguard said, as reported by MilanPress. “It was a long goal kick, we knew [David] de Gea could hit it that long, we read it wrong, I could’ve been more aggressive, there are many things we could’ve done differently.
“It hurts because this is a goal that is unacceptable to concede, that is the truth,” Gabbia admitted.
Gabbia’s statement isn’t far from the truth, indeed. However, it could also be an unselfish act to take the blame off Fikayo Tomori. In reality, the English star was the only responsible Milan defender for Fiorentina’s winner. He made a rookie mistake, misreading De Gea’s long ball, which left his defensive partner on an island.
Milan paid dearly for Tomori’s blunder as they failed to recover from the shock. Theo Hernandez’s underwhelming showing didn’t help, while it’s fair to admit Milan fans expect nothing from questionable summer signing Emerson Royal.
