Despite another massive Champions League setback, Paulo Fonseca insists he ‘liked’ the Milan performance against Bayer Leverkusen. The Rossoneri slipped to a disappointing 1-0 defeat at the BayArena, diminishing their chances of automatic knockout qualification.
After a 3-1 home loss to Liverpool on matchday one, taking points in Germany was imperative for Milan. However, the 19-time Serie A champions paid a hefty price for an uneventful first-half showing. Victor Bonfiace’s match-winner early in the second half pushed the Italian giants into the abyss.
Milan got a foothold in the game only after falling behind. Despite creating several decent scoring chances, Fonseca’s men ended up empty-handed. Theo Hernandez came closest to leveling the score. Unfortunately, his deflected long-range attempt rattled off the crossbar, condemning Milan to a second loss in as many Champions League outings this season.
Unfazed by another sub-par result, Fonseca maintains that this is the best he has seen of his Milan players thus far.
“It’s true that we didn’t win, but it was the performance I liked the most since I arrived here,” he told Sky Sport, as reported by MilanNews. “Above all in the second half, we had a fantastic performance, we created so many chances and just failed to convert them, which is not easy against a team like Bayer.
“We were sad in the dressing room, but we must also be balanced and recognize what we did. I am not satisfied with the result, but I am satisfied with the approach,” the Milan boss admitted.
