Newcastle Again Lay Their Eyes on Sassuolo Veteran Left-Back

Newcastle missed out on Robin Gosens, but they might get a new left-back from Serie A anyway, as they set their sights on Rogerio. They already pursued him last summer. The deal is not simple with just a handful of days to go in the January window, though.

According to TNT Sports, the Magpies offered €15M to Sassuolo. They quickly come to terms with the player, who would get a considerable pay bump. On the other hand, the Neroverdi want to find a replacement before agreeing to the move, Sportitalia reports.

Newcastle targeted Rogerio in the previous window as well. The deal collapsed at the 11th hour as they opted to sign somebody with previous Premier League experience instead. However, Jamal Lewis has not been lived up to expectations thus far, and they are searching for a new contributor.

The 24-year-old Brazilian originally joined his current team in 2016 and has accumulated over 100 appearances with them. He has scored twice and provided five assists. He has been alternating with Georgios Kyriakopoulos this season, who has been slightly more effective. Sassuolo have yet to be linked to other left-backs, although there are some cheap options available across the league.

On top of Rogerio, Newcastle are also pursuing Bayer Leverkusen’s Mitchell Bakker for the role. The Dutch fullback transferred to Bundesliga from PSG last summer. He figures to be more expensive than then Sassuolo defender. The Magpies were in the running for Lucas Digne as well, but Aston Villa emerged victorious in that race.
