Genoa Target Inter Bust to Replace Mateo Retegui

After striking a ‘blitzkrieg’ agreement with Atalanta for Mateo Retegui’s transfer to Bergamo, Genoa are in the market for a new center-forward. According to Sky Sport Italia, via FCInter1908, the Griffins have set their sights on Inter outcast Joaquin Correa.

Genoa will receive a handsome fee for letting Retegui join Atalanta. The Gewiss Stadium club will reportedly pay Alberto Gilardino’s side €22 million plus another €3m in add-ons to sign the Italy international. Retegui will fill the void left by Gianluca Scamacca’s nasty ACL injury.

But the 25-year-old’s impending switch to La Dea leaves Genoa short of reliable center-forward options. Ex-Olympique Marseille flop Vitinha is the only other out-and-out striker at Gilardino’s disposal. On top of that, the Griffins could soon lose Icelandic talisman Albert Gudmundsson to Fiorentina.

Therefore, Genoa must add to their attacking options, ideally within a fortnight, as they embark on the new Serie A season against Inter on August 17. Incidentally, the reigning Scudetto holders could help the Luigi Ferraris outfit address the shortage of numbers in the front third. Correa could be the answer to Gilardino’s problems.

On the fringes of the Inter squad, Correa is ready to pack his bags. However, the Argentine forward has already rejected offers from his homeland and Saudi Arabia, insisting on staying in Europe. Genoa could offer him an escape route from Giuseppe Meazza, preferably in a cut-price deal.

In addition to Genoa, Lazio and Sevilla are also keen on the 29-year-old struggler. That’s music to Inter’s ears, with the Nerazzuri desperate to offload their out-of-favor star this summer to avoid losing him on a free transfer in less than 12 months.
