Milan Coach Fonseca Not New to Struggling Off the Bat

Milan had a pitiful start, collecting just three points in the first three matches against Torino, Parma, and Lazio, which has raised early doubts and questions about Paulo Fonseca. The coach is prone to getting out of the gate poorly, and he has generally been able to turn things around eventually, Sky relays.

The gaffer has won his first three games only once, at Shakhtar Donetsk in 2016/2017, winning the title at the end of the season. In the same stretch, he picked up four points in his first two stops, at Pacos Ferreira and Braga, finishing eight and fourth respectively back then.

Fonseca also didn’t have the greatest impact at Roma, winning, drawing, and losing once in the initial three games in 2019/2020. The Giallorossi closed the campaign in fifth position. The exact same thing happened at Lille at the beginning of the 2022/2023 campaign, with the same outcome in the end.

The boss has been strongly defended by the club’s CEO Giorgio Furlani, but the upcoming matches risk to already be pivotal for his future and permanence on the bench.

Our take on Milan and Fonseca

The expectations for the Rossoneri are a long higher than most of his previous teams, and some of their competitors are marching early. Rather than the results, which could have been even worse if it wasn’t for a pair of guttural reactions, the most worrisome thing is that he seems to have lost the plot tactically and selection-wise already, and some mutiny-adjacent behaviors from their stars surely don’t help his case.
