Atalanta started their Champions League journey in the refurbished Gewiss Stadium this evening against Arsenal. The rise of La Dea over the past few years on the European stage has been quite remarkable, culminating in their Europa League triumph in May.
Their reward for that was a place in the new Champions League league-phase. Far from an easy start they faced an Arsenal side that pushed Manchester City all the way in last season’s Premier League title race.
This didn’t faze Giampiero Gasperini’s men at all and they earned a 0-0 all draw that they very nearly won.
Arsenal Kept Quiet
Subduing their opponents in the first half, Atalanta limited Arsenal to half chances. The most notable coming in the thirteenth minute when ‘keeper Marco Carnesecchi pushed a free kick from Bukayo Saka away and kept the rebound out too.
The hosts great in confidence and in possession as the half progressed and began to assert themselves. Going into the break the pendulum was firmly in their favour.
La Dea Denied by Raya Magic
This momentum was carried over into the second period and in the 51st minute it looked as of they would be rewarded.
Ederson found space out wide and drew in Thomas Partey. The Frenchman was not having a good night at the office and it got worse as Ederson felt the slightest of touches and went down in the area to win a penalty.
Italy international Mateo Retegui was entrusted with the all important spot kick. He chose the right corner but unfortunately for the home support so did David Raya. The ball popped out to Retegui again who headed goalwards but Incredibily Raya was back up to claw the rebound away too.
A truly remarkable piece of goalkeeping.
A Point Gained or Two Lost?
Gasperini was left with his head in his hands, knowing that was the chance. He looked to be right as opportunities were few and far between for the remainder of the game. Arsenal were missing a few players and looked happy to come away with a 0-0 draw.
Both bosses made changes around the hour mark, Jorginho coming on for the unfortunate Partey while many eyebrows were raised when Charles De Ketelaere made way for Juan Cuadrado with half an hour to play.
The Colombian justified his cameo with two curling shots off the wing that had many on their feet. The last real chance of the night fell to Ademola Lookman who was just about to pull the trigger when he was rudely interrupted by William Saliba’s sliding challenge.
While the immediate feeling in the home dressing room may be of regret, Atalanta will be happy with a draw against one of the best teams in England, especially as it one of their biggest games on paper along with clashes against Real Madrid and Barcelona.
With a tinge of regret, La Dea are denied by Raya magic.
