Berardi Revisits Past Choices After Return from Injury

Domenico Berardi played a few minutes in the last Serie B round seven months after an Achilles tear. He revealed some backstories to La Gazzetta dello Sport.

“My world collapsed when I got hurt. I was suffering because I couldn’t help Sassuolo; plus, I wanted to play in the Euro. When you are sidelined for a long time, you can only think, so I tried to reminisce about nice things. My family helped me a lot. The first two months were very tough. I was rotting on the sofa.”

Berardi turned down a move to top clubs a few times when he was younger.

“I didn’t feel mature until I was 26/27. I wanted to play all the time and rejected the possibility of rotating and being on the bench. Maybe I lacked self-confidence. I have no regrets and realized that over time. I’ve been ready for a while.”

“Atalanta wanted me three years ago, but I said no because I didn’t think I would fit their style physically. I wanted to join Juventus in 2023, but the clubs didn’t reach an agreement. I took it badly and clashed with the front office because the time was ripe. I moved on eventually and gave everything for Sassuolo. Now I’d say I could have tried to make the jump when I was 20 or 21.”

Berardi aims to play in the Champions League.

“I’ve been thinking about that competition for three years. I want to hear the hymn from the pitch. It’s an ambition I aim to fulfill. If I’ll be 100 percent and will have the chance, I’ll transfer in January.”
