As rumored during the summer, Giorgio Chiellini is back at Juventus in an executive role. The club made the announcement on Sunday a few days before their Champions League return. He’ll serve as the head of football institutional relations.
According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, the former defender will work shoulder-to-shoulder with CEO Maurizio Scanavino on the business side of the club. He won’t collaborate directly with director Cristiano Giuntoli or assist the squad and the coach like Zlatan Ibrahimovic is doing at Milan.
Chiellini, who has a degree in economics and an MBA in football, will be involved in financial and legal matters to round out his skillset at Juventus after getting his start behind the desk at Los Angeles FC. He won’t be part of the revamped technical area. The former Napoli official onboarded his previous collaborators Giuseppe Pompilio, Stefano Stefanelli, and Michele Sbravati in the summer.
The Old Lady has been missing a former icon in their management since Pavel Nedved left along with Andrea Agnelli. The ex-center-back might be able to replicate the same path as the legendary Giampiero Boniperti. He had started as a board member and eventually became a long-time president.
Chiellini has recorded 561 appearances at Juventus. He only trails Alessandro Del Piero and Gianluigi Buffon in the all-time chart. He made his debut with the black-and-white colors nearly 19 years ago. During his lengthy spell in Turin, he contributed to nine Scudetot titles, among other trophies. He finished his career in the MLS after leaving in 2022.
