Genoa coach Rolando Maran could get the ax as soon as Wednesday night if his team loses in embarrassing fashion against Milan, local newspaper Secolo XIX reports, adding that his potential replacements are two familiar faces: Davide Ballardini, who would be at his fourth stint with the club, or last year’s manager Davide Nicola.
The Grifoni are tied for last place in the Serie A standings as they collected 6 points in 11 rounds. They have won just once, in the opener versus Crotone, while they have drawn against Verona, Sampdoria and Fiorentina. They have been defeated in five of the last fixtures, lastly at the hands of Juventus on Sunday.
Our view
It is a bit surprising that Maran has lasted this long given how trigger-happy president Enrico Preziosi is when it comes to firing coaches. However, they had to endure a COVID-19 outbreak that has affected the form of several players, plus they already had a major change a couple of weeks ago as CEO Daniele Faggiano, who was appointed in September, was fired out of the blue for butting heads with the owner.
After the date against the capolista, the Rossoblu will finish the year with two more feasible tilts against Spezia and Benevento, where they will face must-win situations. Given the short turnaround, it would make more sense to give the gaffer a couple of more opportunities, but all things considered it would not be surprising to see Maran gone without a good result.
