Despite the arrival of André Onana on a free transfer, Samir Handanovic is highly likely to re-up with Inter: “We are very close to reaching an agreement. Both sides want the same thing, and I am ready to stay for another year. I am willing to compete.”
The captain commented on the title race to DAZN (via SportMediaset): “We are disappointed. However, we must be proud because we won two trophies and played beautiful football this season. I feel like the group has grown as a whole. We are well aware of having dropped points along the way. We had 52 total matches. There was an untimely dip between the two clashes against Liverpool, which was costly.”
Handanovic thanked the Inter faithful: “They have always been there for us all year long, even during tough times. We are very sorry for the outcome. We also have to congratulate Milan for winning the Scudetto, though.”
The veteran had a rough start of the season but turned things around and contributed to the cause with a few quality showings and key saves. He concluded the campaign with 40 allowed goals and 21 clean sheets in 50 fixtures across all competitions.
The Nerazzurri wound up paying a hefty price for one of the few titls he did not start. Andrei Radu gave away at least a draw with a late blunder against Bologna. Inter will soon formally announce the signing of Onana from Ajax, but he will not be handed the starting job right away since Handanovic will stick around.
