Juventus Consider Selling Matthijs de Ligt to Chelsea

Premier League heavyweights Chelsea are not giving up on their pursuit of in-demand Juventus centre-back Matthijs de Ligt. As per Calciomercato, the record-time Italian champions are considering the prospect of sanctioning the Dutchman’s departure for a satisfactory bid.

After Barcelona and Manchester United, Chelsea have emerged as de Ligt’s likeliest landing spot this summer. Barca’s well-documented financial turmoil has ruled them out of the race for the 22-year-old. Meanwhile, Man United are pursuing other targets.

That has paved the way for Thomas Tuchel’s side to lure de Ligt to Old Trafford. Chelsea’s interest in the highly-rated Juventus youngster comes in the wake of the confirmed departures of Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen.

Juventus firmly opposed de Ligt’s departure at first. However, they have changed their stance. That’s due to the player’s desire to switch to London. The ex-Ajax man has already informed the club of his wish to leave.

However, Juventus have pinned a substantial €70m price tag on their defensive stalwart. And they are unwilling to budge on their valuation. It means Chelsea can either meet Juve’s demands or look for reinforcements elsewhere.

Both sides are in precarious positions heading into the summer transfer window. While Rudiger and Christiansen departed west London, Giorgio Chiellini waved goodbye to Turin.

The high-profile departures in both camps threaten to leave both managers short of reliable options at the back. De Ligt’s potential move would settle Chelsea’s backline for years. But it would be a massive hit for Juventus.

After an underwhelming 2021/22 season, Massimiliano Allegri is keen to assemble a competitive squad to challenge Milan and Inter for the Serie A title next year. De Ligt has been a significant part of that project.

Yet, as things stand, Juventus may have to dive back into the market to sign another defender.
