Lazio Set to Sign Former Arsenal Midfield for Bargain Price

Matteo Guendouzi will continue his career in Serie A, in all likelihood, as Lazio and Marseille have defined the final details of his move to the Stadio Olimpico. As per Gianluca Di Marzio, the former Arsenal midfielder will soon touch down in the Italian capital to undergo a medical before penning a multi-year contract.

Lazio lodged an official bid for the 24-year-old worth €13 million plus another €5m in add-ons yesterday. Despite showing some early signs of resilience, hoping to get more favorable terms, Marseille have eventually agreed to offload the Frenchman.

Guendouzi enjoyed a rise to stardom at Marseille since joining the club in 2021. He developed into one of the club’s standout performers last season, earning the status of vice-captain in the process. However, Marcelino’s appointment as the new chief of staff in the summer has hindered his first-team prospects at the Stade Velodrome.

It didn’t take long before Lazio came knocking on Marseille’s door. Maurizio Sarri has made two midfield signings this summer in the wake of Sergej Milinkovic-Savic’s departure for Al-Hilal. Daichi Kamada and Nicolo Rovella have committed their futures to the Stadio Olimpico.

But based on the Italians’ unrelenting pressure on Les Olympiens to sanction Guendouzi’s transfer, Sarri is not impressed with his current options. Lazio lacked creativity in the middle of the park in a frustrating 2-1 loss at Lecce on the opening Serie A weekend.

Their lackluster performance must have convinced Sarri to return to the market for one more midfield reinforcement.
