Whether it was due to injuries or another stroke of bad luck, Milan disappointed their fans again on Saturday. Winless across the opening ten Serie A rounds, Udinese came to the San Siro as pre-match outsiders but claimed a deserved 1-0 victory.
There’s no denying that a sizeable injury list doesn’t play into Stefano Pioli’s hands. But his underperforming Milan side still had a relatively straightforward task in front of them, only to blow it up epically. Even if it wasn’t for Yacine Adli’s poorly given penalty, Udinese looked far more dangerous than Rossoneri despite having just 28% ball possession.
Milan might have dominated statistics, but they were well below their A-game. Pioli’s men looked seemingly out of steam, ideas, and a clear game plan. All that led to another underwhelming result, triggering unrest amongst the devastated San Siro faithful. Fans couldn’t help themselves as they jeered the players while they were leaving the pitch.
Pioli conceded in the aftermath that the whistles were justified, admitting Milan performed terribly.
“What happened was that we didn’t play the game we could and wanted to do. The more we pushed, the more we lost clarity and quality,” the Milan coach said, as quoted by Gianluca Di Marzio. “Today we did not play well and we were too chaotic.
“We must be worried by the results and the performance. We knew it could be tricky, as Udinese don’t let you get a rhythm going, but the whole performance was just not up to our standards,” the Milan manager continued.
“We must do much better, it is only fair that the fans jeer and especially that they jeer me, because this was not the performance we wanted.”
