Davide Calabria refused an offer from Galatasaray last summer even though it was wealthy and the fact that he has just a year on his contract with Milan. The talks are currently on hold because the management is weighing whether that would be the best choice for the position, Mattia Moretto reports (via The Daily Briefing).
The Rossoneri signed Emerson Royal for €15M in the role last summer. They would have evaluated the bid had the Italian defender opened the door to a departure. He didn’t, so they were fine with keeping him. It remains to be seen whether his future will still be at San Siro, though.
Calabria has spent the entirety of his career at Milan. He has racked up 260 appearances over the years, scoring 9 goals and providing 21 assists. He has contributed to one Scudetto and one Supercoppa during his time at the club.
The veteran makes €2M yearly according to DAZN. It’s 500k less annually than his new teammate and competitor.
Our Take on Milan and Calabria
It looks like the relationship between the parties is solid, so the fact that the negotiation has gone into the final year of his contract isn’t necessarily indicative of a negative outcome like it generally does. He’s probably not asking for the moon, so the evaluations are mostly technical. He’s just fine, and they’d have to spend a decent buck to replace him and upgrade. The best-case scenario for them would be for Emerson to assert himself as the clear starter, so they could lean on Alessandro Florenzi or a youngster, Filippo Terracciano or Alex Jimenez, as the deputy, without needing to invest if they didn’t want to keep him.
