It’s no secret that Napoli manager Antonio Conte keeps Scott McTominay in high regard. After all, he gave up his favorite 3-5-2 set-up to accommodate the former Manchester United ace in a new-look 4-3-3.
McTominay never had the appreciation he deserved at Old Trafford. However, Conte holds the 27-year-old’s quality in high esteem and looks ready to build his team at Napoli around him.
Even during his topsy-turvy stint at Manchester United, the Scotland international carried a reputation as a ‘striker trapped in the body of a midfielder.’ He used to score vital goals for the Red Devils despite his relatively sparse game time.
Conte will seemingly change that at Napoli as he looks to make McTominay central to his project. The £25.7 million ace repaid his manager’s trust with a goal in midweek Coppa Italia action to open his Partenopei account.
McTominay was on the scoresheet as Napoli humbled second-tier Palermo 5-0. He failed to maintain his scoring exploits in a 2-0 home triumph against Monza on Sunday. But Conte sees the Scottish star as a potentially regular source of goals this season.
“Scott is a player who has goals in his blood; he’s very good at making runs into the box,” the Napoli boss said, as reported by Gianluca Di Marzio. “He has excellent technical qualities, as well as an important physical stature. And he’s strong in the air. In his DNA, he has quite a few goals.“
Though the new Napoli midfielder has yet to score in Serie A, it feels like it’s only a matter of time before he finds the back of the net.
