Napoli invested big to shore up their midfield late in the window, signing Scott McTominay from Manchester United and Billy Gilmour from Brighton, even though they already had two solid starters in Frank Anguissa and Stanislav Lobotka and don’t play in any European cup this season.
According to La Repubblica, Antonio Conte has started the season with 3-4-2-1, but the scheme isn’t set in stone. He might switch to 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1 down the line if he wants to be more offensive-minded and the defense works well with one fewer man.
Napoli have collected six points so far but were bailed by Zion Suzuki’s red card after Parma had used up their subs in the most recent round. They were poor in the first half, leaving plenty of room for the Ducali and struggling to feed the strikers.
The Partenopei have also re-instated Micheal Folorunsho, who didn’t leave and mended fences with Conte. He can handle a few roles in the midfield like McTominay. It won’t happen right away, as most of the newcomers are away for international duties during the break, but the coach is considering substantial adjustments after the early showings.
Our Take on the Napoli Formation
They tipped their hand following their late moves and the missed arrival of another defender like Mario Hermoso or somebody of similar caliber. They can get by in the back if everybody stays healthy, but it’d be a waste of resources if they didn’t use their new midfielders on a regular basis.
