Atalanta caught a prestigious win – their ninth out of the last ten games – on Sunday afternoon as they beat Juventus to leapfrog them to the third place of the Serie A table. The Nerazzurri coach Gian Piero Gasperini was radiant in his post match remarks, praising his boys for the winning effort.
“We tried to be compact because if you leave much space to Juventus it becomes hard as all their players are fast. We had to be good in the defensive phase to try to win the game. This is something we always do well, but today we were both good and balanced. If you look at the scoring chances, perhaps we had a few more than Juventus,” said Gasperini.
However, he also remarked that the road towards a third Champions League participation in a row is still long: “It is still very early, seven games are a lot to play. This win is very important for our morale, it gives us a good boost and adds more fuel in the tank. But the goal is hard to reach, there are many teams in contention and no one is willing to give up.”
Atalanta are set to face again Juventus on May 19 at the Mapei Stadium in Reggio Emilia for the Coppa Italia Final and Gasperini also looked ahead to the upcoming game:
“The Coppa Italia Final will be a different affair, but having won today means that we can beat Juventus and that they can lose against us. I must praise my boys because we beat a strong team, not a patched up one. Having won with difficulty, but deservingly, gives us much pride and strength,” concluded the coach.
