On This Day – December 29, 1970: Serie A Veteran Enrico Chiesa Was Born

As Juventus fans and Italian football lovers are eager to see Federico Chiesa come back gracing the Serie A pitches, today we take a few minutes to celebrate his father Enrico, who was an equally-lethal striker in his prime.

Enrico Chiesa was born on December 29, 1970, and since the mid-1990s on has been one of the most prolific Serie A forwards for a decade. He scored 137 goals across 14 seasons in the top-flight, wearing the jerseys of Cremonese, Sampdoria, Parma, Fiorentina, Lazio, and Siena, before closing his career in the lower divisions of the Italian football pyramid.

Except for his one-year, disappointing experience at Lazio, Chiesa made a difference wherever he plied his trade. However, his most successful days were those in Parma, where he won a Coppa Italia and a UEFA Cup in the 1998/99 season. He was the UEFA Cup top-scorer with eight goals, one of which he tallied in the Final that Parma won 3-0 over Marseille.

Chiesa was also a regular call-up for the Azzurri between 1996 and 1998. He participated to the 2006 Euro Cup, where he also scored one goal, and to the 1998 World Cup.

Italians use to say that buon sangue non mente, which literally translates as “good blood does not lie” but actually has the same meaning as the English “the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree”. In the case of the Chiesa Family, that most definitely seems to be true.
