Paulo Fonseca’s future at Milan hangs by a thread, with Sunday’s derby clash against Inter tipped to determine his fate at San Siro. However, the under-pressure Portuguese manager doesn’t care about persistent rumors linking him with a premature exit.
Fonseca received numerous questions on this topic during his pre-match conference. But he insists he doesn’t care amid speculation Milan are eyeing up several alternatives to replace him after a disappointing start to the season.
“I don’t think about this,” the Milan coach said. “The team and the game against Inter are the most important things. I’m focused on my job, as always, making the team improve to be ready for tomorrow’s game.
“I am 51. If I listened to what the media said, I’d not be able to work. I don’t care about it; it’s not important to me. If you post something on Instagram and I tell you: ‘I don’t like your soul patch beard,’ I am sure you won’t like it and will be upset with me.
“Many people say many things, so how can I remain calm and trust my work if I read what everyone says? To me, what’s important is what I feel here, what people working here make me feel.“
Ending Milan’s six-game losing run against Inter could be Fonseca’s saving grace. Even that isn’t a foregone conclusion. The situation in the Milan locker room is far from promising. That alone could be the scourge of the ex-Roma coach’s life in Lombardy.
Milan have set their sights on several available managers. Former Lazio boss Igor Tudor has emerged as the latest option. Edin Terzic and Maurizio Sarri are also in the mix. However, the Rossoneri will not do anything before the derby.
