Serie A Saturday Action Recap: Inter Run Riot in Uneventful Day

It’s been a rare quiet day in Serie A as only title-bidding Inter lived up to expectations on an otherwise uneventful Saturday. Let’s take a quick look at everything that happened in today’s Serie A fixtures.

Share of Spoils in Turin

Torino and Lazio shared the spoils in a tepid goalless draw at the Stadio Olimpico di Torino in a match featuring a handful of scoring opportunities.

Indeed, while Ivan Juric’s side produced just a single shot on target despite enjoying more of the ball, Vanja Milinkovic-Savic pulled off a mere two saves to thwart the Biancocelesti.

Both sides came into matchday two following opening day triumphs. Torino overcame newly-promoted Monza 2-1, while Lazio came from behind to beat Bologna by an identical scoreline.

However, they took off their scoring boots today. Neither keeper had much to do as the Turin crowd left the stadium without being entertained for their ticket money.

Salernitana Held by Ten-Man Udinese

After a matchday one defeat away to defending champions Milan, Udinese hoped to bounce back at Dacia Arena against last season’s survival strugglers Salernitana.

New manager Andrea Sottil has to thank his goalkeeper Marco Silverstri for saving his team on multiple occasions as the visitors failed to capitalize on a numerical advantage.

Udinese full-back Nehuen Perez received his marching orders on the stroke of halftime for a reckless tackle, leaving his side strapped for a body on the pitch.

Salernitana made the utmost effort to turn their fortunes around following a 1-0 home loss to Roma last time out, but their bid to down the Friulians for only the second time in their top-flight history came up short.

Eventually, they had to settle for a 0-0 draw despite attempting 17 shots on goal, including six on target.

Sassuolo Nail Lecce to Serie A Bottom

Sassuolo may have waved goodbye to talismanic striker Gianluca Scamacca, but long-serving captain Domenico Berardi is still fit and firing.

After a disheartening 3-0 defeat at Juventus in their inaugural 2022/23 Serie A fixture, Alessio Dionisi’s men were out at Mapei to get their domestic season off the mark.

Standing in their way were newly-promoted Lecce, who opened the season with a heartbreaking 2-1 home loss to last season’s runners-up Inter.

In a pretty physical affair, neither side created enough scoring chances until Berardi stole the show with a sensational volley from outside the box to hand Sassuolo a narrow 1-0 win.

Lecce never picked themselves up after conceding five minutes before the halftime interval as the Neroverdi returned to winning ways and pulled off a morale-boosting victory.

Inter Sail Past Lowly Spezia

There was never any doubt as high-flying Inter thrashed Spezia 3-0 at Giuseppe Meazza to maintain their 100% start to the new Serie A season.

In addition to preventing the Ligurian visitors from producing a single shot on goal in the first half, Simone Inzaghi’s team had countless glaring opportunities to put the game to bed before the break.

But Lautaro Martinez’s sublime shot from the edge of the box late in the first half was the only strike in the opening 45 minutes, giving Spezia all to play for after the restart.

Only seven minutes into the second half, Hakan Calhanoglu smashed the ball past Bartlomiej Dragowski to put clear daylight between the sides and set the tone for another celebratory evening.

Second-half substitutes Edin Dzeko and Joaquin Correa combined to give Inter a three-goal cushion late in the game, with the Argentine forward opening his seasonal account.
