Giovanni Simeone completed a permanent move to Napoli this summer after initially coming in on loan from Hellas Verona. Despite a limited role as Victor Osimhen’s second fiddle, he envisions a long-term sojourn in Campania, as he told La Repubblica.
“I’d like to stay here for life, but it’ll be up to me to prove to measure up all the time. Being bought out made me happy. This is my place in the world. As an Argentine, winning here was truly special. I elbowed my way through football for ten years. I know how things go. You must never sit on your laurels.”
Simeone wouldn’t mind facing Atletico Madrid in the Champions League.
“I never squared off against my father so far. I feel like we’ll be paired up with a Spanish team, maybe them. In that event, I’d do my best to beat him. It’s a very tough competition and needs to be prepared without setting an objective but tackling every game as if it were a final. We went far last season with this approach.”
Simeone also discussed the Scudetto race and his ambitions.
“We’ll be the team to beat for everybody this year, so the campaign will be even more difficult. We’re still hungry, though. I want to be ready at all times when needed. The secondary role doesn’t diminish me. Everybody is key in the group.”
