Spinazzola Emotional After First Appearance on the Bench

Leonardo Spinazzola was on the bench in Roma-Salernitana for the first time since tearing his Achilles in the Euro. The fullback commented on his recovery: “I went through some moments where I thought I would never be as fast as before or that I would no longer be able to do certain things. Those were dark times. My wife was incredible during the process, she saw that I was not truly myself, which was very tough.”

Spinazzola talked during DAZN’s show Supertele: “I have cried three of four times when I could not complete some movements. I was like a bull trying to head a concrete wall that would not go down. I hope Roma finish the season well and win the remaining games. Our goal is to obtain the best position possible. We hope to eliminate Bodo/Glimt, and then reach the European Conference League final.”

“We are taking it day by day, so I am unsure when I will get back on the pitch. I was thrilled to be part of the squad and return to a packed arena Sunday. It was the perfect occasion to re-experience the taste of the Stadio Olimpico. Actually playing is a different matter though, and I am still working on the details.”

Spinazzola commented on his coaches: “José Mourinho constantly comforted me during the rehab. I am delighted that Roberto Mancini stayed at the helm of Italy. He achieved something incredible with our help during the summer. Missing out on the World Cup was a tough blow, but we will bounce back. I do not think there is a proper explanation for what happened. Such is football, and you have to perform at your peak against any team to score.”
