Serie A announced that the next edition of the Supercoppa Italian will be postponed from its original dates following a request from Saudi Arabia.

Supercoppa Set to Be Played in Saudi Arabia Next Season

The next edition of the Supercoppa Italiana will take place in Saudi Arabia. Considering the title race and the Coppa Italia final, it will involve two among Inter, Milan, and Juventus. The last two ones were held in Italy, also because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Jeddah and Riyadh hosted the match between the Scudetto and the domestic cup winners in 2018 and 2019.

Serie A CEO Luigi De Siervo announced it to Radio Rai (via Tiscali): “The next Supercoppa will occur in Saudi Arabia. It is the final year of the contract. It is not possible to cease it due to its penalty clauses. We are evaluating a broader deal in foreign destinations in the future, maybe featuring more teams.”

The executive also addressed the new Champions League format: “We are against it. It was approved the same day as the Super League as a reaction to that model. It has 100 more matches just to gather more money. According to their estimations, the UEFA revenue will grow by €1.8B. However, Serie A would lose €200M in the distribution. It is unacceptable. We are trying to change it to eight games, and not ten, in the group stage. We do not like the parameters to qualify for it either. According to the new index, there would be an extra English club in 60 percent of the times, a Spanish one in 30.”

De Siervo also addressed the infrastructural problem: “We have not made progress after the ’90 World Cup. However, Juventus, Udinese, and Atalanta paved the way. Teams must have strong commercial plans nowadays. We can not just replicate what happens in other counties. Still, it is necessary to speed up the bureaucracy. We need an all-hands-deck meeting with the clubs, the government, and the other institutions.”
