Fabio Cannavaro could soon take his first managerial job in Serie A after launching talks with bottom-half strugglers Udinese amidst Gabriele Cioffi’s uncertain future. According to Gianluca Di Marzio, the Friulians have contacted the former Italy international to discuss a potential takeover.
It’s been a while since Udinese came this close to relegation. Just one point clear of the bottom three ahead of the last five rounds, the Friulians have very little room for error at the tail-end of the season. However, it’ll likely be up to someone other than Cioffi to try and steer them out of the danger zone.
Udinese came seconds away from upholding their reputation as ‘stalemate kings’ in Serie A, only to concede deep into stoppages in a 1-0 defeat at fellow relegation rivals Hellas Verona on Saturday. It was their third loss in their four league outings and perhaps Cioffi’s final mistake in charge of the Bluenergy Stadium outfit.
The club’s decision has yet to come, but they’ve started sounding out possible replacements. These are the pivotal moments of the campaign, and Udinese must be sure to have a reliable option ready to take Cioffi’s place before firing him, not least because they play Roma next in the abandoned game from last weekend.
Udinese Consider Taking Huge Gamble
Cannavaro has attracted their attention. But Udinese can’t make a mistake here as any error could prove costly. The former Juventus defender has been out of work since parting ways with Benevento in February last year.
On top of that, he has no experience in top-flight management. After five years in China, he returned to his homeland in 2019 but has since struggled for continuity.
Udinese need a more established coach to navigate these troubled waters.
