Torino striker Duvan Zapata drew level with Paulo Dybala as the joint-best goalscorer in Serie A over the past ten years with Friday night’s strike against Hellas Verona. The 33-year-old goal-getter was on the scoresheet as Paolo Vanoli’s team grabbed a dramatic 3-2 victory at Stadio Marc’Antonio Bentegodi.
It was Zapata’s 123rd goal in Serie A since he first landed in the league in 2013. According to Gazzetta dello Sport, the Torino talisman has equaled Dybala’s record for the most Serie A goals in that span – a flattering achievement for one of the most underrated center-forwards.
After four memorable years at Atalanta, Zapata joined Torino in the summer of 2023. He was on the cusp of linking up with Roma, yet the transfer collapsed at the 11th hour. The move has panned out well as the Colombian veteran settled nicely in Turin.
In addition to bagging 14 goals in 41 league appearances for the club, Zapata has earned the captain’s armband. The Torino skipper has entered the Top 50 of the best scorers of all time in Serie A with last night’s header against Verona.
Torino is Zapata’s fifth club in Italy. Before Atalanta, he featured for Napoli, Sampdoria, and Udinese. Napoli discovered his potential, signing him from Estudiantes in 2013. But Zapata’s career at the Diego Maradona Stadium never took off.
The robust striker was the most lethal in Bergamo, tallying 69 goals in 153 matches for Atalanta.
