Abodi Urges Modernization of Facilities Ahead of EURO 2032

With the UEFA Euro 2032 tournament set to be held in Italy and Turkey, it’s time for the Italian government to seriously start considering the modernization of football facilities in the country. It will mark the return of a major event in the nation for the first time since the 1990 World Cup, and the Minister for Sport Andrea Abodi has backed several cities other than the main ones to take the lead, echoing Paolo Scaroni’s recent comments.

Talking to the media (via TuttoBolognaweb), Abodi spoke of the opportunities for Bologna, Cagliari, and three other mid-tier cities to host the showdown event.

“Euro 2032 is a great opportunity, it will have to generate positive legacies well beforehand, and not only in the cities directly involved in the continental competition. We need contemporary, safe, accessible, technological and energy-neutral stadiums.”

“For Milan and Rome, I am confident that at least one new stadium will be built. But we hope that, in the coming months, there will be an acceleration in Bologna, Cagliari, Verona, Parma, and Palermo, just to mention the projects already underway, in some cases for too many years.”

Milan, Turin, and Rome are expected to fill in three of the five slots available for Italy, but it will take a while for stadiums in Cagliari, Parma, Bologna, Palermo, and Verona to take shape, although a couple of them have already accelerated works.
