Bologna Lining Up Bid for Atalanta Misfit Sam Lammers

With Lorenzo Lucca on the verge of joining Ajax, Bologna have turned their attention toward unsettled Atalanta striker Sam Lammers. Per Calciomercato, last season’s mid-table Serie A strugglers are looking to snap up the Dutch striker.

Lucca was Bologna’s preferred target at the start of the summer transfer window. However, Ajax have moved fast to take the up-and-coming forward away from Pisa. After falling short in their pursuit of the 21-year-old, the Rossoblu have identified Lammers as a potential target.

After making a name for himself at PSV Eindhoven, Lammers joined Atalanta for €9m plus add-ons in summer 2020. Demoted to playing understudy to the likes of Duvan Zapata and Luis Muriel, he made just 15 Serie A appearances in his first season in Italy, scoring twice.

Frustrated with a lack of regular first-team football at Atalanta, the 25-year-old moved to Eintracht Frankfurt on a season-long loan last term. The move paid no dividends, as he failed to gain more playing opportunities in the Bundesliga.

Only five league starts for Die Adler last season saw the Germans ship Lammers back to Atalanta this summer. Yet, Gian Piero Gasperini has no interest in reincorporating him into his line-up next term. That could lead to another temporary exit.

Bologna are now ready to offer him an escape route from the Gewiss Stadium. It wouldn’t be the first time the Rossoblu have lured an Atalanta outcast to Renato Dall’Ara. In 2019, they signed Musa Barrow and turned him into a permanent Serie A fixture.

In addition to Barrow, Bologna head coach Sinisa Mihajlovic has Marko Arnautovic to take care of the centre-forward role. That leaves the Rossoblu strapped for options upfront. In order to ensure strength in depth, they could step up their interest in Lammers. Atalanta won’t mind his departure.
