A long-running transfer saga involving Cristian Romero’s move from Atalanta to Tottenham Hotspur reached its conclusion yesterday. Spurs completed the centre-back’s season-long loan signing with an obligation to buy on Friday.
Tottenham’s interest in Romero first surfaced during the Copa America 2021. The 23-year-old, who won the competition with Argentina, emerged as Fabio Paratici’s number one defensive target for the summer transfer window following an impressive season in Serie A.
After weeks of talks, the Premier League side convinced Atalanta to sanction Romero’s departure for around £47m. La Dea will make a substantial profit on the defender’s move to London, considering they triggered the buy-out option to sign him permanently from Juventus for €16m on the same day they allowed him to move overseas.
Working under the stewardship of Gian Piero Gasperini helped the Argentina international develop into one of the most appreciated defenders in Serie A and Europe. Romero’s sublime displays last season brought him under the spotlight, with Tottenham beating several domestic and foreign rivals to secure his signature.
During his first interview as a Spurs player, Romero refused to hide his excitement for joining the London outfit.
“I’m so happy to be here at this great club,” he told Tottenham’s official website. “From the moment I got the call, I was sure it was the best option for me to keep improving and growing.
“Gio (Lo Celso) showed me the facilities and I’m so impressed. I hope to pay back all the confidence that the club has in me. And I will try to show that on the field.“
Romero also took the opportunity to thank Atalanta for helping him develop his potential.
“Thanks to Atalanta, I’ve improved my game and I’ve made a huge jump in my career. Now everything’s better after signing with this big club. I’m very happy and excited to play, to wear this shirt, and pay back that confidence.“
Meanwhile, Atalanta have already found a replacement for Romero. Gasperini’s side sealed Merih Demiral’s loan move from Juventus yesterday, though they continue to monitor several other defensive profiles.
